Manufacturer service-history reports and factory build sheets are being prepared. They are not currently available to purchase. A make or model guide does not confirm data coverage for that vehicle.
Use the handbook for the actual BMW
BMW’s Driver’s Guide uses a VIN to provide vehicle-specific handbook information for supported models. This is a useful place to establish how the car describes its maintenance requirements and dashboard messages. A handbook explains the car; it is not a replacement for evidence of work already completed.
If you have screenshots from the car, keep the date, mileage and surrounding context. Ask the seller or workshop for invoices that explain the entries, rather than relying on a photograph of an apparently clear service screen.
Separate the engine, body style and equipment
A 3 Series saloon, a Touring and an X5 should not be treated as interchangeable files. Confirm the exact engine and model year before asking a workshop what maintenance should be evidenced. An exterior badge or trim description alone is not enough to establish a car’s complete specification.
Keep factory equipment questions separate from maintenance evidence. The presence of a feature today does not prove it was fitted at the factory, and a future build sheet would not prove that it still functions.
What to request before a viewing
- VIN-matching service entries and invoices, with readable dates and mileages.
- An explanation of any large time or mileage gaps, backed by documents where available.
- A demonstration of relevant in-car information without accepting it as the only evidence.
- Confirmation of the correct schedule from the handbook or a BMW workshop.
